The project is a residential renovation, and the owner is a couple who are engaged in screenwriting. The original building area is 500 square meters, distributed on the upper and lower floors. The screenwriters needed a new two-story studio, a roof terrace, a vegetable garden and a movie viewing space, and hoped to take this opportunity to transform the existing courtyard to fit the overall architectural space.
Our spatial intervention tried to create a montage-like spatial sequence composed of multiple indoor and outdoor spaces of different sizes and personalities at different elevations, but connected to each other. The newly added volume acts as a buffer space, filtering light and sight lines, and becoming a transition zone between the external environment and the original indoor space-no matter in terms of function privacy and openness, light and shadow and material control, creation A series of subtle levels. The integrity of the space is achieved through precise restrictions on the texture and color of the materials used: light steel structure, slender aluminum louver skin used to control light and shadow, glass and textiles with different permeability and privacy, Solid and transparent metal grille ground and white self-leveling ground.
The unity and purity of materials further highlight the diversity of the space's own effects, and become a continuous space sequence extending from the courtyard on the first floor to the platform on the top floor, which continuously changes light, shadow and atmosphere. In different times and seasons, these already rich spatial effects will produce more unpredictable light and shadow changes.
A series of indoor split-levels, balconies and roof terraces of different sizes at different elevations are connected in series by indoor stairs and outdoor ramps into a continuous system, interspersed around the volume of the newly built studio. The rigid volume composed of two square boxes in the original building is transformed into a dynamic spatial system with rich height differences and scattered connections. The two roof terraces that were left unused due to low accessibility have also been incorporated into the new spatial circulation to be activated and utilized. The traditional rigid functional zoning was broken and replaced by an activity complex with more blurred boundaries. The indoor and outdoor areas are open and connected to each other, and activities such as reading, writing, and film viewing and debate can take place easily and freely in different spaces. The additional space thus becomes a natural and seamless extension of the daily life and work of the screenwriter’s family from the original indoor space to the indoor and semi-outdoor spaces. This pure and bright space system is like a white stage, and the users' staying and walking in the space adds a richer drama.
The plants and paving of the courtyard were rearranged to adapt to the new building shape to provide a complete and continuous place experience together with the building. The planting strategy focuses on responding to the privacy issues that are typical in high-density villa areas. The translucent "screen" formed by bamboo, rattan and other tall herbaceous plants not only serves as a means to block the line of sight, but also introduces more layers, thereby extending the depth of the fantasy space in a limited space. The mirrored pool on the east side of the added volume further promotes the integration of the building and the landscape through flexible refraction and reflection. The carefully selected and matched local plant groups provide a rich texture without increasing the burden of future maintenance.
