The project is located in a leafy area of Suzhou, and includes a California cottage from the 1930s to be restored.
The focus of the design is the reconfiguration of the existing houses, emphasizing the importance of the kitchen as the center of the family. The poor lighting and ventilation of the existing houses affected the comfort of the room and was also a core challenge for the design.
In order to retain the characteristics of the original house, the new part is connected by a glass corridor. This creates two inner courtyards to provide ventilation and light for the new building. Due to the tight budget, the designer followed the outline shape of the existing roof and created a simple structure similar to a shed. The treatment of the roof form is to add more light to the new building.
The area of the living room and dining room is maximized as much as possible to become the most comfortable space. The new building connects the garden with the surrounding dense scenery. In order to seamlessly integrate the new building, the carpenter designed a flat packaging system. The oversized dormer windows create a composite high ceiling and open floor plan. The skylight introduces the view of the tree canopy into the kitchen and living room, making the interior of the room closely connected with the environment.
The material remains simple and original. Black aluminum window frames add detail to the white wall. The choice of light-cutting materials for the floor layer saves design costs and maximizes the use of indoor heat. Classic wood furniture softens the interior space.
Allen Key
The Allen Key residence has become an example of modular housing development, which can be flexibly adapted to the characteristics of the site for repeated design. Through this experiment, a series of modules are used to construct one- and two-story houses. This module is based on a grid system that can integrate the height, volume, ventilation, lighting and monumentality of the double pitched roof in the residence.
