 设计师的工作不是制作奇形怪状的东西,也不是简单地让物体看起来更有型。

所谓设计,本质上就是为解决问题寻找新方法。

 The designer's job is not to make weird things, nor to simply make objects look more stylish.

The so-called design is essentially to find new ways to solve the problem.

《佐藤大:用设计解决问题》节选: 要培养“创意型素质”,需从努力“减少变化”开始虽然人们习惯认为,新鲜的环境有助于激发灵感,但对于我来说,却完全相反。

Excerpt from "Sato Dai: Solving Problems with Design": To cultivate "creative qualities", we need to start with "reducing changes". Although people are used to thinking that a fresh environment helps inspire inspiration, for me, it's the opposite .

在生活中,我习惯重复同一件事情,我会在同一个餐厅吃午饭,在同一个地方遛狗,咖啡店也喜欢去同一家,甚至每次点的饮品也是同一款。日常工作和行程也保持一定的规律,尽量减少变化。

In life, I am used to repeating the same thing. I eat lunch in the same restaurant, walk my dog in the same place, and also like to go to the same coffee shop, and even the same drinks are ordered every time. Daily work and schedule also maintain a certain regularity, and minimize changes.

因为在我看来,所谓变化,其实往往是压力产生的根源。所以,就算我去国外出差,也习惯使用在日本国内使用的东西,尽量避免改变。

Because in my opinion, the so-called change is actually the source of stress. Therefore, even if I go abroad on business, I am accustomed to using things that I use in Japan and try to avoid changes.

我一直觉得,保持不变的节奏、步调,反复做同样的事情,这能让我们在关键时刻爆发出惊人的能量。对于肌肉来说,紧张和松弛的幅度越大,能爆发的力量越大,设计也一样。甚至,大脑应该也是一样的道理。所以,在日常生活中,我们应该尽量让大脑处于放松的状态,不给它增加太多不必要的负荷。

I have always felt that maintaining the same rhythm and pace and doing the same thing over and over again can make us burst out with amazing energy at critical moments. For muscles, the greater the amplitude of tension and relaxation, the greater the force that can burst, and the design is the same. Even the brain should be the same. Therefore, in daily life, we should try our best to make the brain in a relaxed state and not add too much unnecessary load to it.  

如何优雅的进行“改编”“从无到有”的叫设计,运用自己的创意让已有的事物重获新生,也是设计的一种。在对设计了解不多的地方,可能会把这叫做“剽窃”(甚至在设计的常识普及率更低下的地方,剽窃本身就是一种正常现象,所以也就见怪不怪引不起什么骚动…)。但在欧美,“再设计”是一项已经成文的公民权利。

How to "adapt" "from scratch" elegantly is called design, and using one's own creativity to regenerate existing things is also a kind of design. In places that don’t know much about design, this may be called "plagiarism" (even in places where the common sense of design is less popular, plagiarism itself is a normal phenomenon, so it's no wonder that it can't cause commotion... ). But in Europe and America, "redesign" is an already written civil right.

从本质上来说,这是一种特别的思考方法。他需要我们重新审视旧的作品,让它变得更加符合时代的需求和生活方式的变化。这就像是一项设计上的“生物工程”,我们所做的,只是抽取那些旧作品中的优良“基因”,再按照新的方式进行重组创新。这时重要的就是,通过重组,是否产生了“全新的价值”。这就是将真正的“再设计”和“核心基本没有变化,只是对事物的表象进行了’更新’”区别开来的关键。如果比作人体,“再设计”就是通过营养的补给和运动的调节,让身体由内而外地美起来,而“更新”只不过是通过化妆让一个人的外貌变得更好看而已。

In essence, this is a special way of thinking. He needs us to re-examine the old work and make it more in line with the needs of the times and changes in lifestyle. This is like a "biological engineering" in design. What we do is to extract the excellent "genes" from the old works, and then reorganize and innovate in new ways. What is important at this time is whether or not "new value" is produced through reorganization. This is the key to distinguish the real "redesign" from "the core is basically unchanged, but the appearance of things has been "updated". If compared to the human body, "redesign" is to make the body beautiful from the inside out through nutritional supply and exercise regulation, while "renewal" is just to make a person's appearance better through makeup.

要说“剽窃”,后者这种表面功夫才是真正可恶的剽窃。国外的汽车设计中,有两款是非常经典的“再设计”作品。一款是宝马的mini系列,一款是大众汽车的“甲壳虫”系列。两者都巧妙的抽出了旧款汽车设计的精髓之处,然后结合时代的变化成功的赋予了时髦的外形。关于这一点,日本汽车行业仿佛更喜欢完全舍弃旧的东西,说是喜欢新事物,根本上是对“新陈代谢”没有太多抵触感。也正是由于这一特性,让日本在战后成为了一个制造大国,各种新产品层出不穷。现在,也许是时候去创造一些属于日本的“再设计”了。2013年,我曾经为大塚家具设计做过一个木质家具的系列。负责制造的,是拥有一百多年历史的秋田木工,我从他们过去的产品中选择了一款潜力相对大的,对其进行了全新的“再设计”。

To say "plagiarism," the latter kind of superficial effort is truly abominable plagiarism. Two of the foreign car designs are very classic "redesign" works. One is BMW's mini series, and the other is Volkswagen's "Beetle" series. Both cleverly extracted the essence of the old car design, and then combined with the changes of the times to successfully give a stylish appearance. Regarding this point, the Japanese auto industry seems to prefer to completely abandon the old things, saying that it likes the new things, but basically does not have much resistance to "metabolism." It is precisely because of this characteristic that Japan has become a major manufacturing country after the war, with various new products emerging in an endless stream. Now, it may be time to create some "redesigns" belonging to Japan. In 2013, I once designed and made a series of wooden furniture for Otsuka Furniture. It is Akita Carpenter, who has a history of more than 100 years, who is in charge of manufacturing. I chose a relatively large potential product from their past products and carried out a new "redesign".

我重新审视了这款椅子的结构,去掉了累赘的部分,让整个椅子轻便了许多,也降低了制造成本,同时,我保留了旧版中自然的原木风格,然后根据配套餐桌的高度将靠背的部分刷上颜色,让它摇身一变,和整个餐厅的氛围搭配得更和谐了。感觉似曾相识,但从未存在过。也许看起来很简单,但这就是“再设计”的魅力之所在。I re-examined the structure of this chair, removed the cumbersome part, made the whole chair a lot lighter, and reduced the manufacturing cost. At the same time, I retained the natural log style of the old version, and then adjusted the backrest according to the height of the matching dining table. Part of it is painted with color, so that it changes and matches the atmosphere of the whole restaurant more harmoniously. It feels familiar, but it has never existed. It may seem simple, but this is the charm of "redesign".  

为了拥有“外行视角”,记得要“忘记”能否向某个朋友的母亲传达清楚这件事,要看拥有多少“外行视角”。那么,如何重新整理自己的观点呢?说起来,这也是我能同时进行三百个项目且能从容应对的原因之一。我经常会被别人问到,同时应付三百多个项目,会不会手忙脚乱?如果要描绘大家对同时进行三百多个项目这件事的理解,就是三百多件事情同时挤在大脑之中。

In order to have a "layman's perspective", remember to "forget" whether it can be clearly communicated to a friend's mother, depending on how much "layman's perspective" you have. So, how do you rearrange your views? Speaking of, this is one of the reasons why I can carry out 300 projects at the same time and can deal with it calmly. I am often asked by others, will I be in a hurry to deal with more than 300 projects at the same time? If we want to describe everyone's understanding of carrying out more than 300 projects at the same time, more than 300 things are squeezed in the brain at the same time.

但对我来说却不是如此。对我来说,更像是下页图中的状态。当我考虑某一个项目的时候,我只专注于这一件事,绝不分心。与此同时,剩下的299件事完全被我忘到了九霄云外。而且,这样还有一个好处,如果按照顺序进行的话,要回到第一个项目需要整整300步,而这期间正好用来好好忘记。

But it is not so for me. To me, it's more like the state on the next page. When I consider a certain project, I only focus on this one thing and never get distracted. At the same time, the remaining 299 things were completely forgotten by me. Moreover, this has another advantage. If you proceed in order, it takes a full 300 steps to go back to the first project, and this period is just for forgetting.

当然,也有不一样的情况,比如有时候,当在和客户面对面坐着谈话时,就会因为某一处疑惑而开始构思(笑)。事实上,人类是很难同时思考两件事情的,就算只是两件事,也可能让自己焦虑不已。所以,科学的做法是各个击破,这样才能保证大脑高速运转,想到精彩的创意。

Of course, there are also different situations. For example, sometimes when sitting face-to-face with a customer, I start to think because of some doubt (laugh). In fact, it is very difficult for human beings to think about two things at the same time. Even if they are only two things, they may make themselves anxious. Therefore, the scientific approach is to break through each, so as to ensure the high-speed operation of the brain and think of wonderful ideas.
